Vacancy for Research Personnel under Projects

Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), South India Centre of Wildlife Institute of India (WII) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, wishes to engage the following research personnel (Indian Nationals only) on purely temporary basis. 1. Project Title: CONSERVING THE OVERLOOKED SUBTERRANEAN CAVE HABITAT: A SUSTAINABILITY APPROACH [PIs – Dr. Manchi Shirish S. & Dr. Jaishri Sanwal Bhatt, JNCASR]
1(a). PROJECT ASSOCIATE-I (Ecology)
No. of Positions: TWO (2)
Duration: 3 Years
Essential Qualification: Post-graduate degree with a minimum of 55% marks in life sciences or environmental sciences (Zoology/Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/ Conservation Biology/Biodiversity Studies/Forestry/Ecological Sciences/Environmental Studies or any other allied disciplines) from a recognized university.
Desirable Qualifications: i) Keen interest in cave and karst conservation, and related environmental issues; ii) skill in identification/classification of invertebrates and vertebrates, and in sampling and preserving techniques; iii) willingness to reside in remote locations with challenging conditions, and travel extensively by both road and sea between the islands; iv) proficiency in cave exploration and mapping, SRT technique, free climbing, and rock climbing; v) familiarity with data analysis and GIS tools; and vi) proficiency in Hindi (speaking, reading, and writing).
Upper Age Limit as on 10-July-2024: 35 Years
Fellowship: Rs. 31,000 + HRA (as per DST-SERB rules)
Description of Work: The Project Associates will i) conduct faunal surveys in remote caves with limited resources, ii) collect and analyze data on cave and karst ecosystems, iii) assist with social surveys to understand local cave and karst conservation perspectives, iv) work closely with the forest department and local communities to develop sustainable conservation/management plans, and v) assist Project Investigators in achieving project goals and other institutional activities.
1(b). PROJECT ASSOCIATE-I (Geology)
No. of Positions: ONE (1)
Duration: 3 Years
Essential Qualification: Post-graduate degree with a minimum of 55% marks in geology, earth sciences, geomorphology, environmental geography, geosciences, environmental sciences, or any other allied disciplines from a recognized university.
Desirable Qualifications: i) Keen interest in cave and karst explorations in remote locations; ii) skill in identification and characterization of geomorphological features and rock formations; iii) familiarity with geochemistry including soil and water chemistry and related analytical techniques; iv) proficiency in cave exploration and mapping, GIS tools, SRT technique, free climbing, and rock climbing; and v) proficiency in Hindi (speaking, reading, and writing).

2. Project Title: BIRD/WILDLIFE HAZARDS TO AIRCRAFT IN JSW AIRPORT, VIJAYANAGAR, BELLARY, KARNATAKA [PIs – Dr. P. Pramod & Dr. P.V. Karunakaran]
2(a). RESEARCH ASSOCIATE-I
No. of Positions: ONE (1)
Duration: 10 months
Essential Qualification: Ph.D. in life sciences (Zoology/Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/Conservation Biology/Biodiversity Studies/Ecological Sciences or any other allied disciplines) from a recognized university.
Desirable Qualifications: i) Competence in identification of wild birds and mammals; ii) professional experience in the field of bird/wildlife hazard management issues; iii) excellent communication and interpersonal skills; iv) proficiency in English and Hindi, and iv) possession of valid two-wheeler and four-wheeler driving license.
Upper Age Limit as on 10-July-2024: 35 Years
Fellowship: Rs. 58,000 + HRA (as per DST-SERB rules)
Description of Work: The Research Associate will i) oversee intensive round-the-clock field work for collecting data on bird hazards to aircraft in the airport precincts and the surrounding 10 km area, ii) interact with airport authorities and field staff, iii) coordinate the field level data collection and project activities, and iv) assist Project Investigators in data analysis, report writing, and other institutional activities.
3. Project Title: BIRD/WILDLIFE HAZARDS TO AIRCRAFT IN SWAMI VIVEKANANDA AIRPORT, RAIPUR, JHARKHAND [PIs – Dr. P. Pramod & Dr. P.V. Karunakaran]
3(a). PROJECT ASSOCIATE-I
No. of Positions: ONE (1)
Duration: 10 months
Essential Qualification: Post-graduate degree (M.Sc.) with a minimum of 55% marks in life sciences or environmental sciences (Zoology/Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/ Conservation Biology/Biodiversity Studies/Forestry/Ecological Sciences/Environmental Studies or any other allied disciplines) from a recognized university.
Desirable Qualifications: i) Competence in identification of wild birds and mammals; ii) excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and iii) proficiency in English and Hindi.

Candidates applying for the above positions should possess all the Essential Qualifications (with originals of supporting documents) as on the date of application deadline.
A candidate can apply for a maximum of two positions only. Candidates applying for two positions should submit SEPARATE sets of applications and attachments.
The upper age limit may be relaxed as per the Government of India norms [up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Physically Handicapped categories and female applicants, whereas up to 3 years in the case of OBC candidates].
Selected candidates will be provided with hostel accommodation at SACON as per availability. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel will be admissible as per the rules.
